"Islamic architecture throughout the world has a regional identity, a stylistic evolution and relevance to the eternal principles of Islam," Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammad, former Prime Minister of Malaysia

Malaysian architecture is a mixture of Islamic, Mughal, Modern, and British ones. Actually this reflects the history of our society. Malaysia has been under influenced of Islam, then British colonial rule etc. by Mr. Azif Bin Md. Nasaruddin, Principal & Chief Ad. Officer VERITAS Architects

Where advanced technology and traditional Islamic architecture meets

NATIONAL PLANETARIUM

The National Planetarium or more locally known as the Planetarium Negara, is a picturesque building made up of a blue-domed structure that sits atop a hill at Jalan Perdana. It was opened on 7 th February 1994 and boasts of a Space Theatre, Space Science Exhibit, Resource Centre, Viewing Gallery and an Observatory Park all within its midst.

This centre is a smart combination of advanced technology and traditional Islamic architecture. Gracing visitors with high-tech resources and educational entertainment, the National Planetarium retains the roots of tradition and dishes a healthy dose of local culture to all who visits. Space Science Studies is a proud effort on the centre’s part to stimulate awareness of science and its wondrous inventions.

Taking up a fully-utilized 32 acres of land, the National Planetarium naturally belongs to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of Malaysia. The area of the building spans 120,000 square feet, and is just the place to be for learning young minds and their families!

The National Planetarium may be reputed to be an educational place, but don’t let that one assumption throw you off an adventurous ride. Its fascinating facilities are fun to explore and extremely worthwhile to spend an afternoon at. Here, you will learn interesting facts about the Universe, the galaxy, the solar system, our very own planet Earth, and so many others. One of its many attractions is the Space Theatre, which screens Space Science and Sky shows daily.

The Planetarium’s other interesting features include the “Mystery of Maya” and “Legend of the Night Sky”; both equally great ways to learn more about space and other things that lie secreted in its orbits. The cinema inside the Space Theatre shows a different movie everyday for an appealing variety. Outside of the Space Theatre, the Planetarium also offers great ‘space travel’ displays for all budding young astronauts to pore over. Space science exhibits are displayed along the walkway of the main hall, and are guaranteed to wow both the young and old. One popular exhibit is the Arianne IV space engine; originally one of the engines used to launch into space MEASAT 1, Malaysia’s first ever satellite! You can also opt to get hands-on knowledge on the Shuttle Spaceball; experience zero gravity that an astronaut feels when in space! An Observatory Park is equipped with a 14-inch telescope where visitors can view the whole stretch of galaxy and its planets. Visitors should make a trip to the Observatory Park on a full-moon day just for the view; it is truly a spectacular sight to behold!

The National Planetarium is connected to the National Museum by an overhead pedestrian bridge. Tour the National Planetarium and be infinitely amazed by what technology can put on show for you here! The centre is open everyday from 10am to 4pm except for Mondays, and the Space Shows screen at three convenient show times throughout the day at 11am, 2pm and 4pm. Adults and children pay RM3 and RM2 each respectively. As for the Space Movies, it is RM6 a piece for adults and RM4 for children.

PERDANA PUTRA

The Perdana Putra building houses the offices of the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister, as well as several other ministerial departments.

The design of the building incorporates elements of Islamic-Mogul architecture and overlooks the Putrajaya Lake.

The stone-clad building forms the distinctive landmark of Putrajaya. Its green pitched roof converges at the onion-shaped glazed mosaic main dome and is surrounded by four smaller domes. Wrought iron bunga raya (hibiscus) - the national flower - motifs and stone carvings decorate the main block.

SERI PERDANA BRIDGE

Inspired by Moorish Islamic architecture and part of the 'protocol route', the 370m-long bridge is built across the lake and is currently the busiest bridge in Putrajaya. The concrete bridge has eight rest areas, with minarets of different styles, for visitors to enjoy the panoramic views of the lake, the Perdana Putra Complex and the Putra Mosque.

There are two separate carriageways over a two twin cell box girder. The foot path is flanked by railings and the road median is lined by decorative street lights.

SRI PERDANA

The official residence of the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Seri Perdana is also used for official receptions and banquets. Seri Perdana comprises three blocks and a main reception/protocol block.

The main reception/protocol block and the banquet block are the formal guest areas and are open to the public for guided tours. The residence block is a self-contained private home for the Prime Minister and his family.

While Malay and Islamic design idioms dominate the architecture of Seri Perdana, the building also incorporates several western and contemporary elements to reflect a universal outlook.

The building also makes extensive use of openings which offer panoramic views of the city. Guests are rewarded with attractively landscaped grounds which are divided into seven zones, each with its own characteristics based on its size and function.

MILLENNIUM MONUMENT

The Millennium Monument is the first national monument to be built in Putrajaya. Its construction serves to celebrate the country's achievements. The monument is meant to be a way for the younger generation to learn about the country's history, the sacrifices and success stories of local leaders, inspiring them to strive for higher achievements in the future.

The monument, which stands in a 25-hectare park in Precinct 2, takes the shape of the Bunga Raya, and is 68m tall. The monument is constructed of solid metal and strengthened with metal structures.
During the day, the Millennium Monument glimmers gold as it reflects the sunlight. At night, the monument is lit up in vibrant pink. The view of the Millennium Monument coupled with the surrounding bridges makes the Putrajaya skyline an impressive sight

PUTRA BRIDGE

Deemed to be the most important of the bridges in Putrajaya, the 435-m concrete bridge connects the Government Precinct to the Mixed Development Precinct, with the upper level of the bridge forming part of the Boulevard.

The two-tier bridge is inspired by the Islamic architecture of the famous Khaju Bridge in Isfahan, Iran. Its magnificent attractions are the four minaret-type piers, complete with observation decks, overlooking the Putrajaya Lake. This unique bridge provides access to pedestrians, vehicles and a monorail, while its piers will be developed into fine dining restaurants with a place for boats to berth.
