On 4th and 5th March 2017, the “Reviving the Islamic Spirit” (RIS) Convention, featuring foremost Islamic scholars from the English-speaking world, will be held at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre. A world renown event known for its thought provoking discussions and honest reflection, the Convention will provide the priceless opportunity to interact in person with scholars such as Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, Imam Zaid Shakir, and Nouman Ali Khan.
They will be joined by faith leaders who are also known for their work in building community, such as Imam Khalid Latif, Executive Director of the Islamic Center at New York University, and Imam Siraj Wahhaj, who has done extensive work in combating drug use in New York City.
This will be the first time RIS is held outside of its home city Toronto, where it began in 2002 as a gathering place for Muslims in the West to overcome contemporary challenges of communication and integration.
“Just as how RIS began in North America in response to the growing distrust of Muslims in the region, and the need for direction and collective introspection, RIS in Malaysia aims to be a bridge to assist attendees from all faiths,” said Aida Shaiza Ismail Zakri, head of the organising committee of RIS in Malaysia.
“Although brief, we hope the time at RIS allows us to really consider the situation we are faced with and how we can be better stewards of our shared future, who are grounded in spirituality and emboldened by knowledge.”
Indeed knowledge is the overarching goal of RIS, reflected in its theme, “1400 Years of Clarity: Restoring Faith in the Modern Age.” The two-day main convention will be followed with a Knowledge Retreat on 6th to 9th March. The Retreat, led by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, Imam Zaid Shakir, Shaykh Muhammad Ninowy, and Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-allah, will be held at Masjid Wilayah.
Adding artistic flavour to RIS is the live entertainment section, “Reviving the Islamic Arts.” Featuring international and Malaysian artists such as Dawud Wharnsby Ali, Raihan and InTeam, “Reviving the Islamic Arts” is one of a few fringe events to be held during the main convention, including a Grand Bazaar, Children’s Programme and RIS Hangout.
Combining an illustrious line-up of speakers with intellectual depth in the spirit of knowledge exchange, RIS in Malaysia is an event not to be missed by those who want to revive the spirit and elevate their awareness of what it means to be a seeker of knowledge and an active, dynamic member of society.
RIS in Malaysia is organised by Al Naqiy Islamic Solutions, Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (YADIM), and the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS).
