Occupying a scenic spot on top of a hill overlooking the sea, Masjid Besar Sandakan is the town’s only grand mosque. It was built between 1985 and 1989, and officiated in July 1990.
Resembling a spaceship that has just landed from a distance, the mosque adopts a contemporary architectural style that is simple and uncluttered. Its dome is covered in subtle geometric patterns, and sits elevated on a tapered square base. The mosque’s interior also sports a minimalist look that enhances space and functionality.
