MOSQUE OPEN DAY 2026: DISCOVER THE HERITAGE & HOSPITALITY OF MALAYSIA’S MOSQUES

KUALA LUMPUR: Members of the public from all backgrounds are invited to visit selected mosques across Malaysia throughout September as part of Mosque Open Day (MOD) 2026, an initiative that offers visitors the opportunity to experience the country’s rich Islamic heritage, architecture, culture and hospitality in an open, welcoming and inclusive environment.

Organised by the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) in collaboration with several mosques around Malaysia, Mosque Open Day forms part of Islamic Tourism Month (ITM) 2026 and aims to position mosques as community-based tourism destinations while further strengthening Malaysia’s position as the world’s leading Muslim-friendly tourism destination.

Beyond serving as places of worship, Mosque Open Day highlights their role as vibrant community spaces that bring people together through culture, heritage, architecture and shared universal values. The programme welcomes visitors of all faiths,backgrounds and nationalities, reflecting Malaysia’s commitment to promoting an inclusive and accessible Muslim-friendly tourism experience.

Visitors will have the opportunity to experience the diverse role of mosques within Malaysian society through a range of engaging activities. These include cycling activities, colouring and cooking competitions, e-sports activities for youths, guided tours, knowledge sharing sessions and community engagement activities, complemented by cultural experiences that highlight the values of hospitality, harmony and mutual respect.

Director-General of the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC), Encik Mohammad Faisal Abu Suaib Khan, said Mosque Open Day is more than just a mosque visit, it serves as a platform to foster greater cross-cultural understanding while introducing the richness of Malaysia’s Islamic heritage to both local communities and international visitors.

“Through Mosque Open Day, we hope to encourage people to see mosques not only as places of worship, but also as spaces that reflect Malaysia’s history, architecture, culture and community life. The programme provides an opportunity for visitors to gain a better understanding of Islam and appreciate universal values such as mutual respect, hospitality and harmony in an open and inclusive setting.”

He added that the initiative also supports the aspirations of Visit Malaysia 2026-2027 and the Malaysia MADANI agenda by advancing Muslim-friendly tourism that benefits local communities, while creating greater opportunities for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and tourism businesses to enhance the visibility of their products and services.
